Codependency is an excessive psychological and emotional reliance on the other person. A codependent person is someone who finds it difficult to function on their own, their behavior, actions are organized around another person, process, or substance. These people are preoccupied with the needs of others and place a lower priority on their own needs.
A codependent relationship is described as a relationship where a person is needy or dependent on the other person. It can even be defined as a situation where a couple becomes so invested in each other that they can’t function independently anymore. Your moods, behavior, or even identity are defined by the other person. It is usually found that in a codependent relationship one is more passive and depends on their partners for decisions while the other person is more dominant and controls the other person and even makes decisions for them.
It may happen due to past behavioral patterns or emotional difficulties. It can vary from situation to situation.
Causes of codependency relationships are:
Damaging parental relationships
Rejection or abandonment
Lack of love and nurture
Mental or physical illness
Family addiction
Signs of codependency relationships are:
Unhealthy or ineffective communication
People-pleasing behavior
Poor or no boundaries
Controlling behavior
Manipulations
No personal interest or goals outside the relationship
Blaming each other
