On the 10th of September every year, world suicide prevention day is observed in order to support the commitment to suicide prevention.
World suicide prevention day is marked to raise awareness about suicide prevention and attempts. Since 2003 this day has been celebrated annually. This day was established with hopes of destigmatizing talks about suicide, raising awareness, and helping prevent more suicides.
The day was established through the combined efforts of the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organization.
Themes have been changing over the years and this year in 2022 the theme is creating hope through actions" and it focuses on the importance of taking action no matter whether big or small, it is to take action to help individuals who are suffering.
Suicide is one of the most common causes of death. About 8,00000 people die from suicide worldwide; in India, more than 1,00,000 people commit suicide every year. Suicide is a tragedy that prematurely takes an individual’s life and has a continuing ripple effect, affecting a number of lives in the lives of families, loved ones, friends, and communities. There are various causes of suicide such as career or professional problems, study problems, abuse, sense of isolation, family problems, violence, mental disorder, financial problem or loss, addiction to substances, chronic pain, health issues, etc.
One of the most important steps you can do to prevent suicide is by having authentic and open conversations about mental health with your close ones. You can help your friends, acquaintances, or anyone who needs help by listening to them, letting them share their stories at their own speed, just being present and not passing judgment, and understanding that we all experience mental health differently and it is completely okay. Above all, helping them to seek support, no matter what is important to seek support and have reliable contact with people with whom you can connect when life gets hard.
