Shyness is a feeling of awkwardness or anxiousness that some people consistently feel while approaching for anything or being approached. It is an emotion that affects how a person feels or behaves around people. Shyness is a response to fear and it can mean feeling uncomfortable, nervous, timid, insecure, or self-conscious.
Studies suggest that although there is the neurobiology of shyness, the behavioral repertoire is orchestrated by a specific circuit of neurons in the brain but even parenting practices and life experiences can have an influence on it.
Causes of shyness:
It may emerge from a few key characteristics such as:
● Negative self-talk
● Self-consciousness
● Low-self esteem
● Fear of judgment or rejection
● Preoccupation
People who are very shy usually make unrealistic social comparisons, holding a belief that others are constantly evaluating them poorly and they usually abandon new social opportunities or miss them which prevents them from improving their social skills and growing holistically.
Shyness can be the result of both biological and environmental forces. It is said that babies are born with different temperaments and those with extremely sensitive temperaments are more prone to be shy but supportive and sensitive parenting can protect them from developing social anxiety or shyness.
How to overcome shyness?
When you accept your individuality and let go of the fear of consequences because when a person has the fear of consequences of their behavior or words, apart from the fear of judgment; even the fear of unaware consequences contributes to one's shyness. A person tends to sit uncomfortably, refuses to eat, drink and move because they may feel that their presence or action may bring uncomfort to others or mockery from others, but when you judge yourself first before letting anyone do and accept yourself and others too, you won’t have this fear. Accepting your unique individuality and even others can help you to overcome your shyness.
If this is stopping your growth, take help from a life coach.
