We are social beings and we are weird to help one another but with the opinions diverting us, instances confusing us, we have really forgotten what we humans are. There are a lot of phrases about being human and about humanity but it is subjective like many other terms. There is confusion between self-love and selflessness. Quotes diverting our thoughts, humans misinterpreting many terms. Even before helping others, we think many times about it, maybe it is because of past experiences. But when it comes to being disappointed by helping others, it clearly means there were expectations over your deeds. Selfless acts define happiness as there is no reason to be disappointed, there are no expectations rather contentment.
Researchers have found a connection between happiness and the performance of selfless acts. When we give something to a person we do it at the cost of personal loss, be it by giving our time, energy, materials, or money. So why there is a sense of happiness, contentment despite this loss?
Neuroscience has demonstrated that giving is a powerful pathway for creating more personal joy and improving overall health. It is said that the altruism center of the brain is considered a "deep brain structure," part of the primitive brain.
Selflessness leads to self-discovery. Yes, you read it right. It leads to happiness, contentment, and self-discovery. When we do something without expecting anything and yet our act brings something to us it is none other than what we humans are searching for, it is “happiness, self-discovery.”
Our brain is complex but it is very easy to identify the neurochemical drivers of happiness. Dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin make up the “Happiness Trifecta.” And when we help others by giving our time, energy, or any other valuable asset, this happiness trifecta is activated. And it helps in the overall benefits.
There are some people who get happiness by seeing other people happy. Maybe all they believe in is spreading smiles, joy. You don’t have to wait to be rich or have excess to give or help. Giving can be in any and many forms. You can just pass a smile to a stranger which may light up their day,You can just help someone in lifting a heavy bag, or you can praise someone for their work. It costs nothing but spreads happiness and joy.
You have a purpose in life and it makes it worth living, it gives you confidence. You develop, grow and these benefits are not known. Your act not only boosts your mood but also motivates you and others. It develops you holistically.
“You don’t need to become a self-sacrificing martyr to feel happier. Just being a little more generous will suffice,” says Prof. Tobler, from the Department of Economics at the University of Zurich (UZH) in Switzerland.
Being generous, kind and humble can be the keys to happiness. Be generous enough to spread smiles.
